Third Grade Topics for Quarter III

This quarter, students will create a detailed survival guide that will include narrative stories, math problems, and analysis of various ecosystems.

Math

·         Concepts of the power of 10 (how the decimal point moves forward and backwards when multiplying and dividing by multiples of ten respectively)

·         Solve word and algorithmic problems of adding, subtracting and multiplying with decimals (up to the thousandths place)

·         Convert measurements in the metric system (ex: meters to kilometers, centimeters to millimeters)

·         Convert measurements in the American system (ex: inches to feet, miles to feet)

·         Convert a few measurements between the metric and the American system (ex: inches to centimeters, miles to kilometers)

·         Add and subtract positive and negative integers

·         Find the missing number in an equation using the opposite operation ( x – 12 = 32,   y/81 = 9,  13 + z = 27,  8 * f = 56)

English

·         Use of past simple and past progressive to write sequenced narrative stories with main ideas and details

·         Read and understand Geronimo Stilton’s “Shipwreck on the Pirate Islands”  fluently with appropriate intonation and pronunciation to be able to summarize

·         Identify character’s feelings and infer points of view based on the text

·         Creates and follows a plan to improve his reading and writing performance

Science

·         Take notes and collect relevant information about specific ecosystems: Ice worlds, wetlands, fresh water, caves and mountains

·         Compares and contrasts with explicit evidence the ecosystems mentioned above

·         Makes interpretations about fresh water and natural resources around the world found in the studied ecosystems

·         Investigates natural resources (especially water) and makes connections about the benefits or dangers in various ecosystems

English	Ø  Students will need to have their Geronimo Stilton book with them   Ø  Your son will be asked to read specific pages from the Geronimo Stilton book and answer questions in complete sentences   Ø  Be able to identify present and present progressive verbs   Ø  Be able to unscramble words to make complete sentences   Ø  Be able to write about the setting, events, problem, and solution from 2 specific pages in Geronimo Stilton   Ø  From 3 specific pages, your son will need to write a summary   Ø  From 2 sentences from the book, he will need to able to make inferences; include clues, prior knowledge, and the inference   Ø  4 pictures will be given in which your son will need to write a short sequential  and creative story, in a paragraph form   Ø  Suggested pages to read in Geronimo Stilton are 108, 84-92, 42-47.    Ø  Students will write a plan for the next quarter about how to improve their English level (similar to the activity from this quarter)
Science	·         Be able to classify mammals, amphibians, birds, reptiles, and fish from a picture ·         Write similarities and differences about mammals and insects ·         Organize the kingdom, phylum, and class of four rainforest animals ·         Explain how to get the scientific name of any species ·         From a list, pick which adaptation fits the  specific rainforest situation ·         From a list of adaptations, consider which 3 are the most important or valuable for survival in the rainforest ·         Create a creature with those three adaptations and explain why the creature is protecting the rainforest and how it uses those adaptations ·         Explain one of 3 questions about the rainforest studied and be able to explain what they learned in their own words ·         Make a connection circle about themselves and the rainforest ·         From the list of Metacognitive strategies, pick which ones help the most and explain why

Apreciados Padres de Familia:

Uno de los temas centrales del trabajo que realizamos con los estudiantes de grado tercero sobre las comunicaciones a través de Internet (cuidados, peligros y uso responsable) implica el manejo de una cuenta de correo electrónico. Este proceso se convierte también en una preparación para dinámicas que empezarán a tener en cursos posteriores al utilizar Phidias o de intercambio de información a través de sus cuentas de correo personales.

Para nosotros es esencial el acompañamiento que de manera conjunta en casa y colegio hacemos en este proceso. Por esta razón, para garantizar la seguridad de sus hijos y teniendo en cuenta las condiciones legales para acceder al servicio de correo electrónico, les solicitamos que en compañía de su hijo creen a nombre de uno de los padres de familia una cuenta de correo electrónico que utilizarán durante el año escolar. Para este fin pueden utilizar el servidor de correo de su preferencia. Es importante que la cuenta esté creada antes del 24 de septiembre o lo más pronto posible, que sus hijos tengan los datos para ingresar a ella y que ustedes compartan con ellos la clave de acceso al correo, como parte del proceso de aprendizaje que adelantaremos.

EXPLORA ARTE II BIMESTRE

Entorno problémico: El Espacio

Temas: La perspectiva lineal, la perspectiva aérea y los planos de la imagen.

Objetivo del bimestre: Identificar maneras de representación del espacio y así aplicar las más adecuadas según una intención artística determinada de acuerdo a su caracterización.

Estrategias: Ejercicios de observación, identificación, caracterización, aplicación, representación, transferencia y creación a través de imágenes mostradas como ejemplo o elaboradas como ejercicio de clase en dibujo y fotografía.

¿Cómo sintetizar lo compartido en la primera charla de Primeras Comuniones con ustedes Padres de Familia?

• Al hacer un resumen de nuestra charla del pasado jueves 27 de septiembre me expongo a la  tarea de recuperar por escrito un momento vivido con ustedes y difícilmente recuperar todo lo allí compartido y profundizado.
• En unas cortas frases trataré de rescatar algunas ideas de nuestra grata charla y en principio agradecer a los participantes a la reunión por sus buenas ideas, algunas aún en el tintero pero a la espera de compartirlas y realizarlas con todos.
• Los momentos vividos con nuestros hijos son únicos y verdaderos tiempos vividos… jamás los borraremos de la lista de los eventos realmente importantes de la vida…
• Recordando a Jorge Bucayun buscador es alguien que busca no necesariamente alguien que encuentra… es alguien para quien su vida es una búsqueda… Ver esta historia en youtube puede hacernos reflexionar en algo que quizá no hemos pensado!!! “todo lo disfrutado… ese es el tiempo vivido!!!!”

•  Durante este año a través del proceso de preparación de los niños para recibir el sacramento de la Primera Comunión podemos participar de muchas actividades en las que como padres se pueden involucrar: primero, acompañando a sus hijos a vivir la experiencia del encuentro con Jesús desde sus casas con su testimonio y ejemplo  y también a través de las experiencias cotidianas que vivan con sus hijos a las que los invita el Colegio (ver cronograma).
•  Para construir una experiencia de fe y motivar el encuentro con Dios hay que vivir y propiciar espacios de afecto, de buen trato, de alegría y gozo en su encuentro. Sobre el afecto, seguridad y confianza podremos de una manera cálida plantear los límites, normas y reglas (máximas evangélicas, mandamientos) para que sean recibidos desde el vínculo que propicia amor. Así no serán una imposición sino frases comprendidas como herramientas para protegernos y enfrentarnos al mundo en pro de nuestra conservación, protección y expresión de valores que nos permitirán ser felices y crecer en el modelo de Jesús.

•    En el Gimnasio Campestre para ser mayores al estilo del Evangelio queremos y pensamos que servir a los demás VALE! Los invitamos a ver nuestra cartelera escolar: Servir Vale!!! Allí hay algunas imágenes de los momentos vividos del año pasado en este proceso de preparación de las Primeras Comuniones.
•    En el Gimnasio Camprestre servir construye a la Comunidad.
•  En la carta del Apóstol Pablo 1 Corintios 12-31 nos hablan de la importancia de todos  los miembros del cuerpo para la construcción de la comunidad y la necesidad de todas las partes para el éxito de nuestro proyecto social comunitario con la Fundación Promoción Humana, en concreto el acompañamiento a 80 niños en su preparación a su Primera Comunión. ¡Así se reconstruye la Iglesia primitiva!
•  Para terminar se expuso un balance en el que se compartieron datos sobre el valor económico de este proyecto social del Colegio el cual fue bien acogido por los padres de familia quienes propusieron algunas ideas para recaudar fondos y ya,en una reunión con las mamás representantes el pasado viernes empezamos a poner en acción.

QUARTER II

“Convivencia”

In quarter, we are going to work  on activities  to build a greater understanding of
  “ self- awareness of personal strengths  and weaknesses” in order to  promote 
empathy, friendship, time management and planning. 

·         Empathy and Friendship: students have created great bonds these past few years, and we would like for students to continue working on creating new friendships and strengthening their old ties with their peers

·         Time Management: making sure students are using their  time wisely in class, being punctual to all classes, and listening or reading instructions carefully

·         Planning: combined with time management, students need to use their  agendas to ensure they have all the tools necessary to plan ahead  

·         Awareness of Personal Strengths and Weaknesses: students should be aware of their strengths and weaknesses and of those of others, likewise students should work on improving their weaknesses and use their strengths to help themselves and others succeed

Unit Project

English, Math and Science

Each student will create a treasure chest of knowledge.  Students will need a box (ex: a shoe box) to decorate it using images related to the topics we are studying and make it look like a treasure chest. Student will store almost everything in this box of knowledge.  The general topic will be the rainforest and the importance of them around the world. Student’s fraction cards/ percent circle, new vocabulary, literary elements, mini-investigation books and science activities will be stored in their treasure chests of knowledge. 

The basis for their inquiry question(s) will begin with their English book and The Great Kapok Tree about the importance of protecting the rainforest and the adaptations of rainforest vertebrate/ invertebrate. Student will visit the school library, use the computer lab, and research other sources this quarter for their inquiry topic.
